SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park) has released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s national address:

"The call is coming from inside the (white) house. If President Trump wants to make America’s elections more secure, I suggest he start with the man in the mirror. The only person who has been caught demanding that elections officials make up thousands of votes is Trump himself, who begged the Georgia Secretary of State to 'find 11,780 votes' to steal the 2020 presidential election. Now the arsonist wants to cosplay as a firefighter, while still peddling the same tired conspiracies about prior elections that he lost. Undermining our democracy by lying about the accuracy of our elections is un-American, no matter whether it comes from the President or the Kremlin. President Trump - and anyone else who promotes this garbage - should be ashamed."

Assemblymember Berman chaired the Assembly Elections Committee from 2017 to 2021, where he was a leader on protecting voting rights and making voting more accessible to all. In 2020, in response to the COVID pandemic, Assemblymember Berman authored AB 860 to ensure every active registered voter in California received a ballot in the mail for the 2020 Presidential election. After this wildly successful effort, during which California had the highest voter turnout since 1952, Assemblymember Berman authored AB 37 in 2021 to make California a permanent universal vote-by-mail state.
